Sarah McLachlan Biography
Sarah was born in Nova Scotia in 1968. She began singing, piano and guitar lessons when she was a child, and was offered a recording contract with the Vancouver based, independent record label Nettwerk Records when she was 17. She didn't sign up with them until two years later (her parents had encouraged her to finish high school one year of college first.)
She moved to Vancouver and her first album, Touch, (1988) went Gold in the Canadian charts.
Her second album, Solace, was released in 1991 and this is when she started getting noticed outside of Canada.
Her third album, Fumbling Towards Ectasy, was released in 1993. It was an immediate success in Canada, and slowly began to hit the charts in other countries around the world too. The hit single from this album, Hold On, was inspired by the documentary, A Promise Kept, about a woman who discovers her fiance has AIDS.
1997 was an eventful year for Sarah. She released her fourth album, Surfacing, with the hits Building A Mystery and Sweet Surrender. This has been her most successful album to date, earning her two Grammy Awards and four Juno awards, and has sold more than 11 million copies worldwide. She also married her drummer, Ashwin Sood, and founded the Lileth Fair tour, which promoted emerging female singer songwriters, and was one of the most successful music festivals of the 1990s.
In 1999 Sarah released Mirrorball, a live album from her Lileth Fair tours, which received a Grammy nomination for the Best Pop Album.
Afterglow, released in 2003, was her first original music for six years. One of the songs from this album, Answer, was featured in The Brave One starring Jodie Foster.
She then released a live album, Afterflow Live, followed by a remix album in 1995 - Bloom.
In early 2006 Sarah completed Winter Song which was a compilation of remakes like John Lennons Happy Xmas, and has sold over one million copies worldwide.
